A couple of days ago, I was asked by a Rotarian if I would like to go to one of the beaches near my city with them and their family. I said, "sure". I had no idea that this beach was such a big deal or how beautiful it'd be (and how much I wouldn't want to leave it!) It was a few hours drive up the west side of the island before we arrived at Bira Beach. I had so much fun just swimming, snorkeling and sipping on coconut water for two days. For only $2.50, we got to take a boat out to a small island about twenty minutes from shore that had some of the best snorkeling that I've ever seen. I had a blast when I chased around the schools of fish, searched for parrot fish (my favorite) and even saw a few big barracudas hanging out at the reef.
School here is... haha well it's okay. I really like the painting/dancing/music part but not the part where the kids all giggle and point at me whenever I walk by them. Hopefully once I've been here for a little longer they'll get more used to me. All of my teachers can speak english about the same as I can speak indonesian, but hopefully that'll help me learn the language that much quicker. Or just make me incredibly confused.
I finally became SCUBA diving certified here and I can use the local university's equipment for free whenever I want! A group from the marine biology department goes out diving every weekend and said that I'm welcome to come with them whenever I want, which is really nice. At the end of September, I got invited to go on a week-long research project with marine bio/oceanography students from the local university and from the University of Munich, in Germany! I'm so excited especially because that's the kind of thing that I'd like to do when I'm in college, and it's really neat that I can kinda test it out while I'm here. I also found out that on September 8th I get to go to a traditional wedding (my host mom's friend's daughter...or something like that). I can't wait to post about it!
I feel so blessed to be here right now, although I really miss deep dish pizza and mexican food.
